Henry Spencer, is the brain child behind the contemporary women’s line, Golden Hanger. Golden Hanger specializes in custom made dresses, leggings, skirts, and anything feminine. The up- and coming fashion designer, is coming down from a creative high after presenting his latest collection, Rouge. After giving you some of his best work, Henry Spencer is not done yet. He’s hard at work on a new collection.
In a year Henry has racked up an extensive resume. He has showcased two collections, participated in a west coast fashion show, been featured in Ambassador Magazine, and hosted a celebrity fashion show for athletes adopting families.
For this Detroit native, his love for fashion started at childhood. His parents were his inspiration, they always dressed to impress. Henry says, he can remember shopping with his parents and grandparents and never getting bored. He was also voted “Best Dressed” in high school. Dressing nice was second nature to him stating that “I don’t really put that much into what I wear. I just do it.” His effortless approach is working. His dress game is just as amazing, as the garments he creates.
But it was a trip to Chicago that sparked a passion for designing clothes. He says visiting the stores on Magnificent Mile for the first time assured him that the fashion industry was, where he was meant to be. Ever since that trip he’s been creating, what we now know as “ Golden Hanger.”
Golden Hanger’s presence on the major fashion front will be seen sooner then later. Ooh La La Blog had the honor to interview the founder and creative director to find out the ups and downs of the fashion industry, as well as the inspiration behind his clothing line. What inspires your designs?
Everything! Innovative aspects of life. Beauty.
How did you get into fashion designing?
I’ve always been interested in fashion..since about 14years old. I remember taking a trip to Chicago and visiting the stores on “The Michigan Mile” for the 1st time. That’s when I knew I had to pursue fashion. Since then Ive been creating,
How do you like the fashion industry as a business? Is it different then what you were expecting, or is it exactly what you pictured?
It’s business!
Describe your philosophy on fashion as an art
Fashion has to be respected as an art. I consider myself an artist, then “fashion designer.” The whole process of creating or shall I say “designing,” can be compared to a painter painting a mural, a music producer creating a beat and so on. Unfortunately, being a “fashion designer” has become a trend and many people are not respecting the art.
What are your goals for your Golden Hanger? (Are you trying to be sold in major retail stores, do you want to stay independent, and are you doing any showings soon)
I have many goals for my line, short and long term. As of now, I’m focused on creating my new collection and presenting it to the world.
What’s the best perk of being a designer?
Being able to inspire people.
What’s the most difficult part about running Golden Hanger?
There’s not enough hours in the day!! So, balancing time.
Can you give any advice to upcoming designers about breaking into the industry?
Paint your own picture, never trace the lines. Art should not be forced..ideas flow freely.
What’s next for the label? Will we see menswear in the future?
I’m currently planning a fashion show. Details will be posted on http://www.GoldenHangerDesigns.com
Where can we get your clothing? What’s the price range?
